Easter Camp at Snape Reserve near Dimboola, Victoria, Australia
White-bellied Sea-Eagle
Finally, finally I've got reasonably clear photos of male Malleefowl despite the weather was overcast over Easter 2013. The Malleefowl was spotted when we visited Mali Dunes. I have wished it would walk towards me, not away from me. But I was happy. Only a few of us saw the bird.
The Snape Reserve is 754 hectares in area next to the Little Desert National Park and near the township of Dimboola in northwest Victoria. This extremely diverse property has at least ten distinct vegetation types on the property, including river red gum swamps, several types of woodlands including the endangered buloke woodland, yellow gum woodland and cypress-pine woodland with large areas of heathland and heathy woodland. We counted birds with a total of over 150 species in and out of reserve area plus some other places we visited over the Easter. We have more bird counts this year than previous years despite dry weather conditions this summer. It is a good news.
In the reserve we spotted Southern Scrub-robin on the second day then again on the second last day of camping. This time I had an opportunity to take reasonable clear photos of it. We also spotted Southern Scrub-robin at Mali Dunes.
White-bellied Sea-Eagle was hovering over the Natimuk Lake when we are visiting the area. Plenty of Pink-eared Ducks and at least 2 pairs of Freckled Ducks were spotted in the Lake. Other excitement includes White-fronted Honeyeater and a big lazy Tree Goanna. To see White-fronted Honeyeater was the second sighting for me outside Gluepot. It was quite exciting for me.
Well, one regret was we heard Shy Heathwren at Mali Dunes but did not see clear enough and it did not give me a chance to photograph it neither. Hopefully one day it won't be too shy for me to take photos. Ok, I talked enough. Here are the photos for you to enjoy.
